Tragedy struck in Umuagwo, Imo State when a container fell off from a heavy duty vehicle and buried students of the Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo.
The Authority gathered that the container fell off from the truck in front of the main gate of Polytechnic while in motion along the ever-busy Owerri – Port Harcourt Expressway.
Unfortunately, as at press time, about three people were still trapped underneath the container.
Sources told The Authority that the students were heading for school at about 10am when the incident happened.
A student who gave his name as John said, “The vehicle was conveying a container from Port Harcourt to Owerri unfortunately, it slipped off and fell on innocent people who were going for their lectures. I believe the victims are students of Imo State Polytechnic who were going to school.
“The thing happened so fast under a split second and nobody anticipated it. Unfortunately, rescue operation is yet to commence”, John said.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, confirmed the incident but said the number of trapped people was yet to be ascertained as at the time of writing this report.
He disclosed that the Command was still trying to secure heavy duty equipments to commence emergency rescue operations.
“Yes, I am aware. There are casualties but we cannot say the exact number. We don’t want to speculate. We are looking for heavy duty equipments for the rescue mission to commence”, Ezike said.
