Borno State Deputy Governor, Usman Mamman Durkwa, has revealed that in the last six years, no past or serving head of different military formations, Commissioners of Police and Directors of the Department of State Service spends five minutes to see Governor Kashim Shettima “with or without prior appointment”.
Deputy Governor Durkwa, in a chat with newsmen at the weekend, said it was necessary for Nigerians to know the extent of Shettima’s support for successive heads of security agencies in Borno State as part of the State Government’s devotion to the fight against Boko Haram.
His words: “I know that majority of Nigerians within and outside Borno State deeply appreciate the sincere efforts of Governor Kashim Shettima in fighting the Boko Haram, supporting internally displaced persons and rebuilding command resettling IDPs.
“But I am also worried that some mischievous politicians are doing everything within their powers to discredit my boss through all kinds of mischief on a daily basis.
“Governor Kashim Shettima is a very humble and modest person who will not say what he is doing but I feel compelled to let everybody know that I have been part of Governor Shettima’s administration since 2011 as Commissioner before I became Deputy Governor in 2015.
“I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that in the last six years, none of security chiefs whether past or present theatre commanders of operation lafiya dole, past or present Brigade Commanders, Air Force Commanders, Garrison Commanders, Commissioners of Police both past and present, Directors of SSS has ever spent up to five minutes in the Government House before having access to the Governor and most of the times they come without appointment.
“The Governor gave a standing order since 2011 that any security chief should be given unrestricted access to his office so long as he is not presiding over a State Council meeting.
“All the security chiefs just come to the Government House and walk straight to his office, no matter what the Governor is doing, he suspends it and attends to the security chiefs.
“He reads every intelligence report they bring, attend whatever issue they come with and he doesn’t attend to anything else until he finishes attending to security chiefs.
“You can go and ask any of them both those who served in Borno State before from 2011 to date or those who are currently serving. to Kashim Shettima what comes first is security. And if they need any information, he will immediately call stakeholders from the communities involved and do his best to get the information.
“I remember there was a time one Brigade commander said it on television that Governor Shettima treats the military as first of the 28th local government area of Borno State.
“You know we have 27 local government areas, the Brigade commander said Governor Shettima treats the military as the 28th local government and the military comes first.
“I want to urge mischief makers to allow Governor Shettima remain focused as he has always been to continue to attend to the challenges of Borno State. The military is doing its best and making huge sacrifices.
“Fight against insurgents is difficult all around the world. Mischief makers should stop trying to distract him. I am confident that if Boko Haram couldn’t distract the Governor, nobody attempting to discredit him will succeed”, Deputy Governor Durkwa added.
